Flora

The Mediterranean eco-region, of which we are part, occupies less than five percent of the earth's surface yet has almost twenty percent of the world’s plant species, including a high number of rare and endemic examples. The mountains in our area are covered by large tracts of evergreen “encina” holm oak forests, with hazels, ash and pine at higher elevations. Further down, at the base of these mountains, dense “matorral” shrub thickets, composed of a wide range of tree species and plants are common. And in the area where most of our vines are planted, the vegetation becomes more open and mosaic-like, including savannas, grasslands and “tomillares” thyme scrublands. In the spring and early summer, there is an amazing show of wild-flowers growing beside our vineyards.
