Fauna

A wealth of ecosystems and landscapes along with a system of non-intensive agriculture sustains a great diversity of wildlife. Insect-life abounds, especially in the warm spring and summer months, when butterflies, bees, praying mantises and dragonflies are found in great numbers out in the vineyards. This in turn is important for the pollination of our vines and in supporting the rest of the food chain. Reptiles and amphibians include skinks, green monitor lizards, snakes and frogs. But the most evident of our wildlife species are birds and it is common to see eagles, kites, falcons, hawks and owls, as well as insectivores such as hoopoes, bee-eaters, partridges, swallows and a multitude of finches. With regards to mammal species, these tend to be shy, but can be spotted at night time- wild boar, foxes, hedgehogs, bats, hares, rodents and every so often genets and martens in the mountains.
